PNW Zen Garden
When beginning a new design project, I like to start by identifying elements or concepts that best fit the aesthetic and program goals of the client, followed by developing multiple design options. I have found that creating multiple design options helps to identify limitations and and leads to more creative solutions for space use. For this residential project in SW Portland, I went through iterations with the client to develop their Pacific Northwest zen garden.
I identified two preferred layouts: 1. Inspired by pools flowing into one another 2. A viewing deck and rock garden inspired by Japanese pagodas. An existing Ginkgo tree, beloved by the clients, would be the focal element. From here, I developed three options, utilizing different ground materials.
