Horticulture & Gardening

Iā€™m a plant enthusiast with a background in horticulture. Following my undergraduate, I worked for a year at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Garden in Columbus, Ohio, as a horticulturist and grounds technician. While completing my graduate degree I worked as a gardener for the Museum of Natural and Cultural History in Eugene, OR, caring for their native plant exhibit.

My time in the field has informed my choices as a landscape designer. I feel confident determining the quality of potted plants from nurseries based on their character- root bound, a topped leader on branching plants, or evidence of pests or disease. It has given me perspective on the maintenance needs of plants, allowing me to determine which would be best for low to high labor gardens.

Maintenance is a big part of gardening and different seasons require different touches. Pictured here is a wild ginger bloom, tucked into a bed of leaf mulch spread around the bed to help protect the plants and soil over winter.

I have experience installing large scale plantings and am willing to jump in with a shovel.

Caring for plants in a green house setting is my happy place. I enjoy tending to rare and tropical species, watching their unique flowers and growth patterns, so different from those here in the PNW, emerge.
